THIS EVENT IS OVER
Maui artist and printmaker Paul Mullowney holds an exhibition in the Corner Gallery during which time he will create a new body of work in a variety of media including woodcut, etching, photography and installation.
The work is an ongoing experiment process of exploration which started with the August 2010 exhibition by the same name at Paia Tattoo Parlor on Maui, Hawaii. Inspired by traditional tattoo parlors where artists work and mingle with the public in an atmosphere of creative frenetic energy and in private and semi-private cubicles, the exhibition functions as a living performance and installation where Mullowney’s private studio is relocated to the PNCA Corner Gallery, just off the Swigert Commons. The result will be—from setup to finish—a three-week installation/performance/exhibition of new and ongoing works in progress. All the ephemera associated with the working studio will be set up for the exhibition creating a constantly changing art experience where the viewing public will have a chance to see the progression of the art-making process.
Daily exhibition updates will be posted on a blog dedicated to the process.
In lieu of the traditional opening reception, the exhibition reception for Work In(g) Studio will be on the second to the last day of the show, Friday, April 29, at 6pm, when portions of the newly created body of work will be on display.
As a master printer in the field of intaglio etching, Paul Mullowney has collaborated with major international artists on printmaking projects in America and Japan. On Maui, he was founding director of the former fine art print publishing program HuiPress. His large expressive woodcuts have been shown at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Honolulu Printmakers, on the mainland and in Japan. He has been visiting faculty in the department of printmaking at PNCA for two semesters.
