Please join us for an intimate conversation with artist Miles Cleveland Goodwin ‘07 and PNCA faculty emeritus Tom Prochaska at Froelick Gallery.
Drawn back by the landscape, the people, and the old ways of doing things, Miles Cleveland Goodwin ‘07 returned to his home in rural Mississippi after studying painting at PNCA. Goodwin’s paintings reflect his home, a place where “the woods are swallowing homes like snakes eat eggs.” This Evening With an Artist invites you to sit in on and participate in an intimate conversation with about art, inspiration, and landscape with Goodwin and faculty emeritus Tom Prochaska.
This Evening With An Artist is presented with support from Froelick Gallery.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Through paintings, sculpture, and works on paper, artist Miles Cleveland Goodwin examines an America that is both long past and yet to come. He crafts a unique landscape portrayed through a lens of archetype and myth and peopled with characters familiar or fantastic yet always resonant. Not quite dystopian, but fundamentally introspective and haunting, the work is meticulously crafted with layers both of paint and allusion into a narrative that simultaneously draws the viewer into what’s happening but maintains a deep reserve.
All of this rests on a bedrock of rare skill and ability coupled to a distinct artistic sensitivity to a subtle anticolor, depth of surface, texture, brushwork and manipulation of paint and material. Each canvas evolves like sculpture, and imagery arises through a complex and ever-evolving process of interaction between artist and materials. The result can appear like an old master painting of a scene played out in a landscape that has yet to emerge from our shared anxiety for the future. Or a prophetic vision transfigured in paint and rescued from the corner of an old attic.
Goodwin earned a degree in painting at printmaking from PNCA in 2007. He exhibits nationally, with recent exhibitions at Valley House Gallery (Dallas, TX), Froelick Gallery (Portland, OR), Greg Kucera Gallery (Seattle, WA), The Grace Museum (Abilene, TX), Hallie Ford Museum of Art (Salem, OR), and Mark Wooley Gallery (Portland, OR). He lives and works in Georgia. Goodwin is represented by Froelick Gallery.
ABOUT THE EVENING WITH AN ARTIST SERIES
Throughout Portland, you can see the influence of Pacific Northwest College of Art’s student, alumni, and faculty artists and designers on the cultural landscape of the city. You can encounter their work in galleries and artist-run spaces, in exhibitions and permanent collections, and as public art on streets and along transit corridors.
In this new event series, PNCA presents intimate conversations with emerging and established artists who share a deep connection with PNCA. We hope you will join us for an Evening With An Artist this fall.
