Graduating with a degree in Environmental Studies in the 1970’s, Bryant began work as a wildlife biologist, living on a 90 acre island off the coast of San Francisco studying seabirds and marine mammals. As one of the original members of Northern California’s mountain bike movement, he took a ‘temporary leave’ from biology to work for Specialized Bicycles, creator of the first commercial mountain bike. That ‘temporary’ position lead to a career in product creation, working for a wide range brands in the cycling, outdoor and athletic markets. While at NIKE, the opportunity arose to combine his passion for environmental work with his background in product creation and map the path towards the creation of more sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. There he managed a team responsible for creating NIKE’s sustainability metrics and co-authored NIKE’s Considered Index, one of the earliest sustainability indices. He has gone on to collaborate in the creation of the Outdoor Industry Eco Index and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Index, which has garnered the backing of universities, NGO’s, the EPA and global brands as diverse as Patagonia, DuPont, Arcteryx & Levis. Today, Bryant splits his time between work as a consultant and giving back through mentoring and citizen science.
