Just as smells, sounds, textures, and tastes can conjure feelings and memories, visual elements such as color, line, shape, space and value can evoke emotions. I have always been drawn to the complex beauty of nature; violent, powerful, unforgiving as well as delicate, noble and contemplative. The spot in the mind that some would devote to religion is for me the brain matter that I devote to the wilderness. I seek the woods as some would seek a cathedral, to feel the majesty and power of something bigger than oneself; and to contemplate the wonder that is life. It is my aim to reflect on impactful or simply beautiful moments I have experienced in the wild by painting them. I recreate the sensation through a process of taking the naturally occurring shapes and color palettes observed to inform my composition and color choice in creating a painting that reflects more than just the physical experience of nature.
