This new series of sculptures and drawings continue Rice’s interest in escapism, playscapes, and enchanted objects. His work is informed by a desire to reimagine the design and intention of playgrounds. With a background in illustration and painting, Rice’s process begins in the two-dimensional world and moves into real space—the effect: an imaginative environment pulled directly off the page. These experimental forms that can be considered concepts for larger play structures, as well as public installations. In this collection, Rice captures an unedited, interior monologue with great energy and imagination, exploring the human need for the transformative experience of play.

Curatorial Fellows and MFA in Visual Studies candidates, James Knowlton and Elena Thomas, are the present facilitators of exhibitions at the Lodge Gallery inside Allied Works Architecture and PNCA’s MFA Galleries/Student Project Spaces at 511 NW Broadway.
