This new series of sculptures and drawings continue Rice’s interest in escapism, playscapes, and enchanted objects. His work is informed by a desire to reimagine the design and intention of playgrounds. With a background in illustration and painting, Rice’s process begins in the two-dimensional world and moves into real space—the effect: an imaginative environment pulled directly off the page. These experimental forms that can be considered concepts for larger play structures, as well as public installations. In this collection, Rice captures an unedited, interior monologue with great energy and imagination, exploring the human need for the transformative experience of play.
