False Memory Syndrome
Condition in which a person’s identity and interpersonal relationships center on a memory of a traumatic experience that is objectively false but that the person strongly believes occurred.
The project presents a museographic space that houses objects that collect events and specific modes of violence carried out during the operations of the CIA and the US Army towards various countries around the world after WWII. The massacres of civilians are the aftermath of invasions, interventions, political repression and murder of social leaders in these places. The events shown are based on the decalcified reports of the CIA documenting the clandestine activities promoted by Washington in order to achieve political and commercial control in key points.
These events are not part of the “History”, never exist and never will, they live only in the collective memory of the victims, and their echoes can be perceived all around us.
Diego Morales-Portillo has exhibited widely including shows in Guatemala City, Madrid, Buenos Aires, and San Salvador with highlights including solo shows at Ixchel Museum in Guatemala City and group exhibitions at the National Museum of Art of El Salvador, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santa Barbara as part of Pacific Standard Time. His work is held in the Rozas-Botran Foundation and the Fondazione Benetton Studi Richerche. He received a BFA from the National School of Plastic Arts Rafael Rodriguez Padilla, Guatemala, 2010 and earned a Bachelor Cum Laude in Graphic Design from the Universidad del Islmo, Guatemala, 2015. He is currently in the MFA in Visual Studies program at PNCA.
